Do you ever feel like you are running from one task to another? But seem to get absolutely nowhere? Maybe you feel stressed, anxious and overwhelmed by your never-ending to-do list? It doesn't have to be this way, and life can be easier. It often requires simplifying. And it can benefit our wellbeing tremendously.
It has become an immediate practice for myself to simplify as soon as I begin to feel overwhelmed. With each step of simplifying I feel lighter. And able to think clearly again. It's how I coped when my mother passed away. Simplifying taught me that all the clutter we surround ourselves with or fit into our days is often unnecessary.
"Be a curator of your life. Slowly cut things out until you’re left only with what you love,
with what’s necessary, with what makes you happy."
– Leo Babauta, Zen Habits
Areas we can simplify:
- Meals and exercise
- Our daily routines and social life
- Children's daily routines and activities
- Digital life (email inbox, apps, social media, digital filing)
- Homes and material possessions
- Our relationships
With each step we take to simplify, we begin to reap the benefits.
The benefits of simplifying:
- It clears your mind
When processes, routines and our surroundings are kept simple, it helps us to feel calmer within ourselves. We're able to think more clearly when we have less to worry about.
- It gives us more space to move
When our homes are free of clutter, it allows us to move easily throughout our space. Our homes become more functional and inspiring. We have less to clean and worry about. Which all helps to calm our mind.
- It creates time to focus on what really matters
With less 'stuff' to worry about we have more time for what actually matters. Time for togetherness, to spend with our spouse and/or children, or for doing those activities we love.
- You realise that you don't actually need as much as you think you do to be happy
When we simplify and let go of the unnecessary, we begin to realise that what we had all that time we didn't actually need. That life can still be enjoyable with less and when it's kept simple.
- It saves money
Meals can be delicious when simple. Our homes can be beautiful when minimal. Our lives will still be enjoyable when we simplify our activity. All these things we reduce will save us a great deal of money.
When we make time to think about what is essential to us, and let go of anything that isn't, it opens up our life. It creates a sense of freedom and allows us to regain control again. We function better. We become happier within ourselves. And we begin to understand what actually matters.
